Recommended Reading
Devotional/Prayer
Authur Bennett, editor. The Valley of Vision: A Collection of Puritan Prayers and Devotions. This is an incredible book to say the least! We often use it in worship during our times of prayer. I have used it as a daily devotional for many years. The anonymous prayers that are recorded here will stir your heart and enflame your love for Christ and the Gospel. Wow!
Graeme Goldsworthy. Prayer and the Knowledge of God: What the Whole Bible Teaches. This is an outstanding book on the doctrine of prayer from a well-respected Biblical theologian from Australia.
Understanding Reformed Theology
Michael Horton. God of Promise: Introducing Covenant Theology. This is a wonderful book for laypeople that explains Covenant Theology in very simple terms. If you are new to the Reformed Faith, then this book is a must read!
O. Palmer Robertson. Christ of the Covenants. Probably the best book on Covenant Theology ever. It is a little more detailed and challenging than Horton’s book but if you can get through it you’ll be glad you did. Also, this one will certainly help with getting a grip on infant baptism.
Kim Riddlebarger. A Case for Amillennialism. If you want to know what Reformed Christians believe about the Second Advent then this book is for you. Riddlebarger is a first-rate theologian and pastor, and this book will clear up all mysteries and misunderstandings about the A-mill position.
William Hendriksen. More Than Conquerors. Speaking of the ‘end times,’ as far as I am concerned this is the best commentary on the Book of Revelation from an A-mill, Reformed perspective. You might want to look at this one in preparation for our next series of sermons from the first 3 chapters of Revelation (Fall 2010).
Dennis Johnson. Triumph of the Lamb. This is another outstanding treatment of the book of Revelation. If you can navigate through it you’ll come to a greater understating of how we view this difficult epistle and how it’s hope-filled message serves today’s Church.
Robert W. Godfrey. An Unexpected Journey: Discovering Reformed Christianity. Here is a very good book for those who are seeking to understand what we believe as Reformed Christians. Dr. Godfrey is a church historian and tells his personal story of coming to the ‘doctrines of grace’ in very compelling terms.
Daniel Hyde. With Heart and Mouth: An Exposition of the Belgic Confession. The Belgic Confession is one of the ‘Three Forms of Unity’ that we follow. Hyde is a pastor who has provided a very helpful commentary on one of the most beautiful and moving confessions of faith ever written. And be sure to check out Jesus Loves the Little Children: Why We Baptize Children. Hyde has also written an excellent book explaining and defending infant baptism. If you need some help with this doctrine you must read this book!
Doctrine/Christianity
A. W. Tozer. Knowledge of the Holy: The Attributes of God and Their Meaning in the Christian Life. No one treats the doctrine of God like Tozer, the great Christian and Missionary Alliance pastor! This book is a classic and has impacted the lives of millions in a powerful way! Read it and see why. Also by Tozer is Whatever Happened to Worship? A Call to True Worship. Ditto!
Tim Keller. Counterfeit Gods: The Empty Promises of Money, Sex, and Power and the Only Hope That Matters. This book is easily the one that has most affected me this year! Read it and be careful. Your idols will be exposed and you will be driven to your Savior for more grace!
John Stott. The Cross of Christ. This is a hefty book dealing with the atonement of Christ. Stott sets forth a brilliant case for the penal substitutionary view of the Lord’s death. This one is really important in view of the many challenges to the atonement that are floating around the Christian landscape these days.
Sinclair Ferguson. In Christ Alone: Living the Gospel-Centered Life. Dr. Ferguson is both a scholar and a pastor. Everything he has written is great (see below), and this book is especially good in practically applying the doctrine of salvation.
Jerry Bridges and Bob Bevington. The Bookends of the Christian Life. Our good friend Jerry Bridges has written yet another excellent book, this one dealing with the two ‘bookends’ of the Christian life: the righteousness of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit.
Michael Horton. The Gospel-Driven Life: Being Good News People in a Bad News World. What’s the Reformed alternative to all of the ‘purpose-driven’ hype? The Gospel-driven life, of course! I hope everyone in our church reads this one!!
Church History
W. Robert Godfrey. John Calvin: Pilgrim and Pastor. Dr. Godfrey sets the historical record straight on Calvin. This is a fascinating read, and you’ll come to appreciate and admire one of the most maligned and misunderstood figures in the history of the Church.
Iain Murray. The Forgotten Spurgeon. We Reformed folks love Charles Spurgeon, the great English Baptist pastor of the 19th century. This book will help you understand why we love him so much and why he is known as one of the greatest preachers the world has ever heard!
For Children
Sinclair Ferguson. The Big Book of Bible Truths 1; The Big Book of Bible Truths 2; The Big Book of Questions and Answers; The Big Book of Questions About Jesus. Dr. Ferguson has written a series of books for children that are very well done. This is the perfect way to teach your children the essential truths of our faith!
R. C. Sproul. The King Without a Shadow. A wonderful treatment of the doctrine of justification on a child’s level. Who says a philosopher can’t write something for kids!
Marriage/Family
Paul David Tripp. What Did You Expect? Redeeming the Realities of Marriage. This is a book on marriage that I have not yet read. However, it comes very highly recommended and I’m sure Carol would be happy if I read it!
J. C. Ryle. Thoughts for Young Men. This is a practical, classic work by the great 19th century Anglican Bishop of Liverpool. Every young man, older man, and father and grandfather needs to work through this one! It is also perfect for the women and young women in our lives!
Apologetics
Doug Powell. Holman Quicksource Guide to Christian Apologetics. This little book is fantastic! If you have an interest in learning more about defending the faith, this is the place to get started. Powell sets forth all of the essential arguments for God’s existence, the resurrection, and the truthfulness of the Scriptures. This is also a great one to use in teaching your children to understand and defend the faith.
