ORDER OF WORSHIP FEBRUARY 8, 2015

Call to Worship: Dr. Michael Calvert, Teaching Elder
Psalm 90:1-2

Responsive Reading: Psalm 147:1-6
Pastor: Praise the Lord!
People: For it is good to sing praises to our God;
Pastor: for it is pleasant, and a song of praise is fitting.
People: The Lord builds up Jerusalem; he gathers the outcasts of Israel.
Pastor: He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
People: He determines the number of the stars; he gives to all of them their names.
Pastor: Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.
All: The Lord lifts up the humble; he casts the wicked to the ground.

Prayer of Adoration:

Old Testament Lesson: Isaiah 40:21-31

Song: Hallelujah, Praise Jehovah Hymn 57 (v.1-4)

Song: How Deep the Father’s Love For Us CCLI# 1558110

How deep the Father’s love for us, how vast beyond all measure,
That He should give His only Son to make a wretch His treasure.
How great the pain of searing loss – the Father turns His face away,
As wounds which mar the Chosen One bring many sons to glory.

Behold the man upon a cross, my sin upon His shoulders;
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice, call out among the scoffers.
It was my sin that held Him there until it was accomplished;
His dying breath has brought me life – I know that it is finished.
I will not boast in anything, no gifts, no power, no wisdom;
But I will boast in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection.
Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer;
But this I know with all my heart – His wounds have paid my ransom.

New Testament Lesson: Mark 9:30-37

Corporate Confession of Sin and Assurance of Pardon: 1 John 2:1

My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous

Song of Response: Abide With Me CCLI# 43190

Abide with me: fast falls the eventide; the darkness deepens, Lord with me abide
When other helpers fail and comforts flee, help of the helpless, abide with me.

Thou on my head in early youth didst smile; And though rebellious, and perverse meanwhile
Thou hast not left me, though I oft left thee, On to the close, Lord, abide with me.

I need Thy presence every passing hour; what but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s pow’r?
Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, abide with me.

I fear no foe with Thee at hand to bless; ills have no weight, tears lose their bitterness
Where is thy sting death? Where grave thy victory? I triumph still, abide with me

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes; shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies
Heav’n’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee; in life in death, abide with me.

Scripture Reading and Prayer for the Church: Galatians 4

Confession of Faith: The Apostles’ Creed
Trinity Hymnal p. 845

I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary: Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead and buried: He descended into hell: The third day he rose again from the dead: He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty: From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost: The holy universal church: The communion of saints: The forgiveness of sins: The resurrection of the body: And the life everlasting. Amen.

Preaching of the Word: Dr. Michael Calvert, Teaching Elder
Genesis 15:1-6; 22:1-14 “The Covenant With Abraham–Part Four”

Communion*:

Song: Why So Heavy CCLI# 5543234

Oh why so heavy, oh my soul? Thus to myself I’ve willed
Oh why so heavy, oh my heart? And why so sorrow filled?

CHORUS: Hope thou in God, He still shall be Thy glory and thy endless praise
His saving grace shall comfort thee through everlasting days,

His goodness made thee what thou art and yet will he redeem
Oh be thou of a contrite heart and put your trust in him.

Benediction:
*Professing and baptized members in good standing of a Church in which Jesus Christ is proclaimed as Lord and Savior are warmly invited to join with us in the celebration of the Lord’s Supper.
