Order of Worship – September 20 2015

Call to Worship: Psalm 18:16-19
Pastor: He sent from on high, He took me; He drew me out of many waters.
People: He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me.
Pastor: They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the Lord was my stay.
People: He brought me forth also into a broad place;
All: He rescued me, because He delighted in me.

Prayer of Adoration:

Old Testament Lesson: Jeremiah 11:18-20

Song: All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name Hymn 296 v.1,3,6
Song: How Deep, the Father’s Love For Us CCLI #1558110

How deep the Father’s love for us, how vast beyond all measure
That he should give his only son, to make a wretch his treasure
How great the pain of searing loss, the Father turned his face away
As wounds which mar the chosen one bring many sons to glory

Behold the man upon a cross, my sin upon his shoulders
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice call out among the scoffers
It was my sin that held him there until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life; I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything: no gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ; his death and resurrection
Why should I gain from his reward? I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart: his wounds have paid my ransom

New Testament Lesson: Mark 9:30-37

Prayer of Confession:

Assurance of Pardon: Colossians 1:19-20

Song of Response: Have Thine Own Way Hymn 688 v.1-4

Scripture Reading and Prayer for the Church:
Fred Fohrell, Ruling Elder Matthew 3:1-17

Preaching of the Word: Dr. Michael Calvert, Teaching Elder
“The Sixth Commandment: You Shall Not Murder, Part One” Exodus 20:13

Prayer of Preparation:

Confession of Faith: The Heidelberg Catechism – Lord’s Day 40

Q 105. What does God require in the sixth commandment?

A: That I do not revile, hate, insult, or kill my neighbor either in thought, word, or gesture, much less in deed, whether by myself or by another, but lay aside all desire of revenge; moreover, that I do not harm myself, nor willfully run into any danger. Wherefore also to restrain murder the magistrate is armed with the sword.

Q 106. Does this commandment speak only of killing?

A: No, but in forbidding murder God teaches us that He abhors its very root, namely, envy, hatred, anger, and desire of revenge; and that in His sight all these are hidden murder.

Communion*:

Song: Why So Heavy CCLI# 5543234

Oh why so heavy, oh my soul? Thus to myself I’ve willed
Oh why so heavy, oh my heart? And why so sorrow filled?

CHORUS: Hope thou in God, He still shall be Thy glory and thy endless praise
His saving grace shall comfort thee through everlasting days,

His goodness made thee what thou art and yet will he redeem
Oh be thou of a contrite heart and put your trust in him.

Benediction:

*Professing and baptized members in good standing of a Church in which Jesus Christ is proclaimed as Lord and Savior are warmly invited to join us in the celebration of the Lord’s Supper.
