Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This Sunday we will consider the Eighth Commandment of the Decalogue–“You shall not steal” (Exodus 20:15). And while this divinely given Law looks simple enough on the surface, its implications are far reaching to be sure. Following the pattern we have set, we will first consider this Commandant as originally given to the people of Israel at Mount Sinai and trace its further expression throughout the Old Covenant Scriptures. Then, we will carefully explore its application to us in light of our Lord’s life and teaching and the New Covenant Scriptures.
As with the other Commandments, this prohibition of stealing–in all of its various forms–necessarily includes its opposite, or the positive side. And this is where things get most interesting! If stealing betrays a heart filled with greed, deception, selfishness, pride, and other such evils, then obedience to this Law takes the form of contentment, humility, integrity, and respect for the property of others. Most importantly, however, is the vital connection between this Commandment and trust in God’s gracious providence, which, of course, reaches its summit in our Lord Jesus Christ!
Let me suggest that you read the following Scripture passages as you pray and prepare your heart for Lord’s Day Worship: Psalm 50:18; 62:10; Isaiah 10:1-3; 61:8; Jeremiah 7:9-11; Ezekiel 22:12; Hosea 4:2; Amos 3:10; Matthew 6:11, 26-29; 7:7-11; 19:16-24; Luke 19:1-10, 45-46; Romans 8:32.
