Sermon Preview

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

If we could have listened in on the prayers of the Apostle Paul as he wrestled before the Lord on behalf of those fellow-believers in Christ that he loved so much, what would we have heard? What would he have desired for them? What would he seek the Lord for on their behalf? What did he believe they needed more than anything in all of the world, and more than any other blessing that God might give them?

Well, we don’t have to speculate about this for long, for we have the written record of exactly what Paul so desperately wanted for his brothers and sisters in Christ. We find his prayer preserved for us in Colossians 1:9-12.

As we examine this passage on Sunday, we will identify three major requests that the Apostle mentions in his prayer for the Colossian Christians:

First, Paul prays that they will all be filled with the knowledge of God’s will (v. 9).

Second, he prays that they would all live in a way that pleases the Lord (v. 10).

Third, Paul prays that they would all be divinely strengthened for endurance and patience (vv. 11-12).

But, because this is the living and abiding Word of God, what Paul desired in prayer for those believers serving the Lord in Colossae two-thousand years ago is also an inspired list of things that we need today! Here is an Apostolic prayer for Christ Presbyterian Church and for all of us who are in Christ Jesus!

As always, I eagerly look forward to probing this wonderful Word from God with you this coming Lord’s Day!

Fellowship With Our Missionaries

Remember that at 9:15 AM this Sunday we will enjoy a wonderful time of fellowship with Dr. Steve and Rita Williams, our missionaries to New Zealand. I hope you can come and meet them and learn more about their ministry.

Vacation Time

From Monday June 11 through Sunday June 24 Carol and I will be away on vacation. In my absence it will once again be our great joy to have Rev. Jim Daughtry preaching for us on June 17 and June 24. Jim will be preaching from John 15:1-11 on both Sundays, and I know you will be richly blessed by his ministry to us. Please keep Jim in your prayers as he prepares to deliver these messages.

I love you all so much and can’t wait to see you on Sunday!

Mike

Announcements:

Summer Schedule: As of Sunday May 27, Christ Presbyterian is on Summer Schedule. There will be no Sunday School, and regularly scheduled bible studies for men, women, and youth are on hiatus. Fellowship will be each Sunday at 10 AM, with worship beginning at 10:30 AM. Check this space for information regarding when the normal schedule will resume, including dates and times for specific studies and activities.

Church picnic: Our annual Church Picnic is coming up on the afternoon of Sunday, June 24th. It will be at the Huntsville Botanical Gardens. The diaconate is still finalizing details for time and food, so stay tuned for more announcements and to sign up to bring side dishes.

Women’s Monthly Lunch: The next Women’s Monthly Lunch is July 5 at 11:30 AM.

Men’s Whitewater Rafting Trip: After surveying the congregation, it looks like July 21 is the Saturday that accommodates the most people. Adam Turnbull will be in touch shortly with those expressing interest. Please contact him if you have any questions.

Breakfast with Steve and Rita Williams: Dr. and Mrs. Steve Williams, our PCA missionaries to New Zealand, will be with us this Sunday. At 9:15 AM we will have a time of breakfast and fellowship with Steve and Rita, and hear more about their work in New Zealand. We will meet in the fellowship area. Then, Steve will give us a report from the mission field during our morning service of worship at 10:30 AM. All members and guests are invited to attend!

Psummer Psalms: Psummer Psalms! Memorize one entire Psalm this summer, then join us for a recitation at the church, followed by ice cream. NOTE: This announcement earlier indicated that it was for men’s ministry only; actually everyone is encouraged to participate. Recitation can be individual, or together in a group or family. If desired, you may give a reason for picking your specific Psalm before you recite it. Once we’re done sharing God’s word from memory, we’ll share some ice cream in the fellowship hall.
“How sweet are your words to my taste…” Psalm 119:103. We are planning the event for Sunday, August 12 at 4:30pm.
If interested, email darondrown@gmail.com for weekly encouragement and accountability.

FCA Power Camp Food Needs: Hello Church Family! In just a few weeks; June 18th-22nd FCA will have its Madison West Power Camp at Hampton Cove Middle School right across the street from our church! Many of our youth have attended this camp and as they get older go back to volunteer and serve in some way. It is neat to see how boldly the interns love on and present the gospel to the 7-13 year olds that attend camp. I get the privilege of being the lunch lady again this year and am looking for help! My favorite part of this camp is working alongside fellow brothers and sisters while serving the kids and staff at camp. We feed about 450-500 people each day for lunch, not to mention the snacks and goodies for the staff and interns. Each year we prep lunch, fill many many cups with Gatorade, serve food, clean up and have a blast doing it! If you are interested in joining us and helping during lunch (10:30-2:00 time frame), or during the family night meal Wednesday June 20th 6:00-9:00 let me know!

I also have a wish list of needs for the camp. If you are interested in providing things from the wish list below drop it by church the next 4 Sundays, or even during the camp. Please label the items dropped off with my name and leave them in the Christ Pres. kitchen. I will put together the dessert and snacks for coaches, staff and interns from what is donated and dropped off by our church. Anything dropped off will be MUCH appreciated!

4-6 gallons of vanilla ice cream
ice cream Sunday toppings
10- 2 liters of root beer
veggie or fruit trays for coaches and staff each day (such a treat and a blessing for the adults trying to be “good” food wise)
snack items such as granola bars, fruit snacks, muffins, cookies (we need lots and lots of these )
cakes, brownies, bars, or any dessert to be served at lunch for coaches and staff each day

As always we ask for prayers that the hearts of campers would be opened to hearing the Gospel and that lives would be impacted for Christ! If you have any questions don’t hesitate to get in touch with me!

Baby Nursery Volunteers: Moms of babies/toddlers, please sign up to work in our baby nursery at least once this summer. I also encourage all ladies of the church to sign-up. We are down a staff member there (Mrs. Irene had shoulder surgery) until the fall. Please consider serving our families in this way! Click HERE to sign up.

New Nursery Staff Member: Please welcome Miss Tori to our nursery staff. She is working with children in the first classroom next to the kitchen. Please be mindful of this and let your children know they cannot run through the kitchen or try to access that room. This is now considered a part of our nursery and only accessible for Miss Tori and our mothers.

VBS Needs: We are still in need of storytellers for VBS. This involves coming each day for about 1.5 hrs to present a short story to each age group. This is fun and interactive. I had amazing tellers last year, and it is such a blessing for our children and the main method that the gospel theme is presented to them each day. Please email me to volunteer for 1 or more days! This can be men, women, or a young adult. Sign up HERE. There are several needs, so please pray about helping us! We cannot do it without you guys!

Senior Fellows June Activities: On Monday, June 25 from 6:30 to 8:00 PM the Senior Fellows will attend Music In The Park at Big Spring International Park (behind the Huntsville Museum of Art) to hear the US Army Materiel Command Bands. Bring chairs, picnic dinner, etc. Meet at the Kennedy Memorial Torch. Bring your spouse, kids, grand-kids and friends.
