Sermon Preview

Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

Before I give you a preview of this Sunday’s message, let me remind you that one week from tonight, next Friday September 20, is our Marriage Conference with Pastor Nate Shurden.

Nate is the Senior Minister of the Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Franklin, Tennessee. Nate is a graduate of Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, MS. While in seminary, Nate served at First Presbyterian Church Jackson in the Christian Education Dept. and as Assistant Editor for reformation21, the online magazine of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals. Upon graduation, Nate was called to be Minister of Discipleship and Young Adults at First Presbyterian Church Jackson where he served for three years. In 2010, Nate accepted a new call to Franklin, TN to help plant Cornerstone Presbyterian Church. Nate is married to Christy, and they have four young children.

Please be in prayer for this evening and for Pastor Shurden as he prepares to come and speak to us.

Now, let me tell you about this week’s message from God’s Word.

Once again, our text will be Genesis 1:26-27. We will be looking carefully at how the Bible describes our creation as human beings in the “image” and “likeness” of God, and how these two words are also related to our being created as “male and female.”

This very simple declaration, that God as made us according to His very “likeness” as “male and female,” has massive implications for our lives in many ways! And we will be especially careful to examine these implications as they concern: 1) what a human being really is, 2) the uniqueness of being human, 3) the connection between the “image of God” and our physical bodies, and 4) the “image of God” and our sexual differences.

While this might initially sound somewhat obscure, or overly theological rather than practical, we should understand that these matters form the very epicenter of the current controversy in the broader Evangelical Church concerning the issues of sexuality, gender, marriage, and salvation itself!

On Sunday, we will once again open the Word of God, our only infallible and inspired authority, and see what our Lord has declared to be true about our humanity, and how our souls and our bodies have been created for His glory.

I love you all so dearly!

Mike

Counselor’s Corner:

On occasion someone will ask me what books I might give to someone struggling with grief and loss.  This is certainly not a bad question at all.  After all, there are a myriad of resources on the issue, many of them having the potential to greatly encourage, describe expectations and provide helpful guidance in the midst of pain. Yet, it is also good for us to consider what books I ought to read as I consider helping those struggling with grief and loss.  In this post, we describe three resources that you might consider reading as you approach family and friends dealing with the pain of loss.
