The Commander of the Lord’s Army
This coming Lord’s Day we will get back into the Book of Joshua as we consider the strange event recorded in 5:13-15. Here is the inspired story of the surprising encounter that Joshua had with a mysterious warrior who identified Himself as the “commander of the army of the Lord” (v. 14). The One whom Joshua met and conversed with was, as verse 13 makes clear, well armed and ready for combat—“with his sword drawn in his hand.”
While this episode is filled with mystery, it is nonetheless one of the most vital elements in the whole story of Israel’s entrance into the Land of Promise and her ultimate conquest of Canaan. And, even more importantly, here we will find a most wonderful lesson regarding the New Covenant ‘Israel’—the Church of our Lord Jesus Christ—and how she is to worship and faithfully follow her Commander and King.
