Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
This coming Sunday, we will get back to ‘normal’ having survived our recent experience of unusual winter weather, praise the Lord!   Thank you for praying for our building, which did very well under the stress of the extremely low temperatures we experienced. We appreciate so very much the tireless work of our Deacons, Tim Cummings, and others who labored to keep the Church building safe.
Our message this Sunday will be the final one on the ‘Odd Paradoxes of Our Identity in Christ.’  Our text will be taken from what is surely one of the most widely recognized verses from the Epistle to the Romans.  In Romans 12:1, we find this staggering (and paradoxical) exhortation:
“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”
The paradoxical nature of this exhortation is discovered in the tension between the words “living” and “sacrifice.”
When we consider the Old Covenant sacrifices, we think of the animals that were slaughtered before the Lord and consumed in the fire.  A sacrifice, such as an animal, could only be offered once.  Yet, Paul picks up this sacrificial language taken from the Old Testament Levitical code and applies it to all who are now in Christ.  We are to consider ourselves to be sacrifices that are given, yet remain alive!
How can this be?  And what does the Apostle have in view for us, practically speaking?

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Meals and Fellowship Ministries – CPC will support the Huntsville Pregnancy Resource Center (HPRC) on February 8th by providing a meal for their Thursday evening parenting class. There are two ways to support the HPRC: 

  1. Coordinate with Tina Alhorn to deliver a meal for 15 people to HPRC (220 Rands Ave. SE) 4:30-5:00 pm on February 8th–everything in disposable containers.   2. Donate HPRC-requested items (onesies 0-3 month and 3-6 month,  pants or shorts, towels/washcloths, baby blankets.  A collection box will be in the narthex for the next three Sundays.

Women’s Ministry Announcements

  • Tuesday morning Bible study begins January 23rd, 9:30-11am at the church. Childcare is provided. We will study the book ‘Five Lies of our Anti Christian Age’ by Rosaria Butterfield.
  • Tuesday evening Bible study at 6pm at the home of Cynthia Keen. We are studying  the book “Identity Theft – Reclaiming the Truth of Who we are in Christ” by Jen Wilkin
  • Wednesday morning Bible study is at the church, 10-11:30 am.  Study book is “Abide” by Jen Wilkin.
  • Senior Sisters meets monthly on the third Thursday from 10-11:30am
  • Senior Sisters exercise class meets Tuesdays at the church, 10-11:30am
  • Monthly luncheon held the first Thursday of the month at Timbers Edge Clubhouse at 11am.
  • Ladies Family Forum – February 8th from 6:30-8:30pm at the home of Leslie Jeffries. Study is geared toward ladies with elementary age children with the topic “Raising Children in a Christ-centered Home.”

Children’s Ministry Announcements

  • VBS: Mark your calendars for VBS on June 10-13, 2024. Please contact Anne Swanner if you are interested in serving at VBS this year.

Career Ministry Announcements – Sunday Evening Bible study & fellowship meets at the home of Jim and Sharon Daughtry, Sundays at 5:30pm.

Men’s Ministry Announcements

  • Men’s Lunchtime Bible Study – Every Friday at 11:30 in the Fellowship Hall
  • Senior Fellows – Our next breakfast will be at 9am on Tuesday, Feb. 6th.
  • Senior Fellows – Zig Jastrebski will give his Life Story/Testimony in the Family Room 10 AM, Tuesday, Feb. 13. All Fellows and other friends of Zig are encouraged to attend. A chill lunch will follow.

Youth Ministry Announcements

  • Youth Group Fellowship meets tonight at 4:30 at the church. 

Bridal/Baby Showers – Baby Shower for ShayAbigail Beam on Saturday, February 3rd from 9-11am at the home of Ashley Turnbull. 

Expecting – Please pray for the Stephens (missionaries to Thailand) expecting in February and the Beams, due in April.
