A Glorious Gospel Worth Fighting For
This coming Lord’s Day we will be taking our sermon text from the words of 1 Timothy 1:3-11. In this lengthy section of the epistle, Timothy will be solemnly charged with the task of standing against the false teachers who have gone astray from the Gospel, and introduced strange and divisive doctrines into the Ephesian church.
As we will see, the essence of the false teaching being propagated in the church had to do with a fundamental misunderstanding and misapplication of the Mosaic Law. In response, Timothy will be challenged by Paul to counter this heterodox teaching with what the Apostle calls “the gospel of the glory of the blessed God” (v. 11). With these words, the gospel of Christ is set in direct contrast with the “myths and endless genealogies” (v. 4) which have captured the attention of Paul’s opponents.
As we examine this passage, we will seek to understand what it is that makes the gospel we have believed a most glorious message that is worth fighting for at all costs.
