A Living Holy Sacrifice: Part One
This coming Lord’s Day we will begin our series of messages on Romans 12.
Romans 12:1 is certainly one of the most well-known and frequently quoted verses in all of Scripture. Its urgent summons to all professing believers in Christ is set forth in simple terms:
“ I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”
When we consider this one line of inspired Scripture, there are two places in it to which our eyes seem to be directed.
First is the word “ therefore.” And this term forces us to look back to all that has gone before in chapters 1-11 of the letter.
The second point of focus is the phrase “ living sacrifice.” And with this, we are directed to consider our present and future lives as those whom God’s amazing and powerful grace has eternally redeemed.
We might say that there is a huge question suggested when we get to 12:1–
Now that we have been saved by grace though faith in Christ, how are we to live?
For the next twelve weeks this summer, we will follow along with the Apostle Paul as he answers this question in the most practical of ways.
This Sunday, we will survey the landscape of chapter 12, familiarizing ourselves with the great emphases and themes that arise in these verses. And then, on the following Sundays, we will discover the answer to this one essential question having to do with how saving grace is to be put on display in everyday life.
I can’t wait to gather with you on the Lord’s Day with open Bibles and hearts aflame with love for our Great King and Savior!
