A New Nation is Born
Our journey through the Scriptures will continue this Lord’s Day as we arrive at the Book of Exodus. As you know, we are engaged in a series of sermons on the theme ‘Great Events in the History of Redemption.’ This week we will follow the continuing saga of the growth of the Covenant nation in land of Egypt. I will be preaching from Exodus 1:1-22 and I would encourage you to prayerfully read this amazing introductory chapter. In Exodus 1 we are going to encounter a “new king” over Egypt, one who “did not know Joseph” (v. 8). We will see how the Covenant people are sorely afflicted by this king, how he devises a horrific plan to curtail the growth of the Jewish people, and how the descendants of Jacob are turned into slaves. The highlight of this initial chapter is the obedience of two “Hebrew midwives” who “feared God” (vv. 15, 17). What they did, in resolute defiance of the king’s direct command, is truly remarkable and it served to save the people of God from certain destruction.
